Topology Optimisation

This optimisation method finds the best distribution of material, given a particular objective and set of constraints. It works by removing material from a solid volume in an effort to minimize the optimisation objective, while satisfying the set of constraints.

The example below  showcases the possibilities in a simple lightweight bracket. This bracket was part of a machine which was powered by a single charge from a small accumulator. Having a limited amount of motive energy, all dynamic components needed to be as light as possible. In this particular instance the stress and deflection values for the modified part were only fractionally larger than the original; the saving in mass though was a remarkable 44% over the original bracket.

The optimised bracket:

- Mass 44% lower.

- Stress 6% higher.

- Deflection 8% higher.
